Objectives: To develop a heuristic approach to grammatical knowledge, through the analysis of authentic material;
To develop innovative pathways that move away from traditional grammaticalism;
To develop an approach to languages as complex natural mechanisms and “living”, articulated realities;
To develop awareness that the purpose of grammar teaching (of Italian, classical languages and modern languages) is not limited solely to production and comprehension skills, but also includes the study of deep structures;
To promote interlinguistic comparison.
To initiate potential action research pathways;
To encourage dialogue between disciplines and departments with a view to holistic education;
To promote self-directed learning within schools.
Target participants: Teachers of language subjects (Italian and modern languages) in lower and upper secondary school
Training methodologies: Participatory theoretical lectures will be followed by workshop sessions in which teachers will be guided in producing material that can be immediately used in teaching practice, including through brief pathways of independent planning and methodological metareflection, in the light of a coherent theoretical framework.
Each lecture will be completed by training sessions (individually or in groups) to be carried out in e-learning mode, using free multimedia platforms.
Programme:
MODULE 1. GRAMMAR OF THE MIND AND SCHOOL GRAMMARS
The module will focus on the universal mechanisms underlying the functioning of languages, emphasising the contribution of dialects to grammar teaching, with particular attention also to motivational aspects. The groundwork will therefore be laid for launching interlinguistic comparison workshops.
MODULE 2. THE CONCEPT OF PHRASE: HOW WORDS ARE GROUPED
The module will illustrate the notion of “phrase”, proposing its use as a key element for language analysis. Workshop examples of lessons and innovative exercises will be proposed on the basis of constituent analysis of the simple sentence.
MODULE 3. THE VERB PHRASE: ANALYSING THE SIMPLE SENTENCE
The module will illustrate the notion of “verb phrase” and will propose a teaching methodology based on this concept, problematising the traditional ways of analysing the simple sentence (logical and valency analysis).
MODULE 4. TYPES OF PREDICATES AND INTERLINGUISTIC COMPARISON
The module will examine the different types of predicate, discussing their syntactic structure. In addition, a pathway of interlinguistic comparison will be proposed on the basis of the skills developed during the entire training activity.
