Ea(r)th: resources, risks, respect

The SGI–SIMP 2026 congress is a valuable opportunity for those who carry out research or study at university, as well as for professionals, aimed at sharing knowledge, experiences and perspectives for the future of disciplines related to the geosciences, which have always been concerned with the study of the Earth in all its extraordinary complexity, from the most superficial environments to the deepest parts, through direct observations, indirect methods and the use of numerical models. 

New tools and new technologies, including artificial intelligence, make increasingly accurate and precise analyses possible, allowing ever more detailed knowledge of the processes that govern our planet, by studying their effects quantitatively in the geological past and providing valuable information on the impact and management of ongoing changes.

The need to diversify energy sources, together with ongoing climate change, has social and environmental consequences that can only be addressed through in-depth geological knowledge. In addition, the growing demand for raw materials has, on the one hand, renewed research into georesources, their origins, characteristics and usefulness, but on the other has led to their intensive exploitation, with significant environmental consequences.

The risks arising from changes to the land, as well as climatic risks, are becoming increasingly important issues for our society, on which we are called to act in order to ensure a new and informed management of the environment and its resources.
