A course focusing on the use of living organisms to create or modify plants, animals, microorganisms or their constituents in order to design products and processes useful to humans. Thanks to biotechnology, renewable sources can be found for the production of energy, to contrast environmental pollution, to design new, more effective drugs, to economically produce biomolecules for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, to make food control more effective. You will acquire basic knowledge in the various sectors of biotechnology and cultural and technological skills to produce goods and services through the analysis and use of biological systems, their parts or derivatives, and also to address bioethical issues. You will find employment in the chemical, pharmaceutical and agri-food industries, in the health and veterinary fields and in environmental protection.

Characteristics and objectives
The course provides the basic knowledge in the different sectors of biotechnology and the cultural and technological skills to produce goods and services through the analysis and use of biological systems, their parts or their derivatives; for this reasons the student also addresses the bioethical issues and the biotechnological regulations. Theoretical and multimedia lessons are flanked by laboratory activities. To achieve the qualification, at the end of the third year the student must, under the guidance of a tutor, write a thesis.
The degree program includes training activities that refer to the areas of industrial, agri-food, environmental, pharmaceutical, medical and veterinary biotechnologies.

Occupational opportunities
Graduates will be able to work in companies of the biotechnological sector, in chemical, pharmaceutical and agri-food industries, in the health and veterinary sectors, in public and private research and diagnostic centers, in public and private consortia for environment protection, and in scientific communication.

From Bachelor's degree to Master's degree
The course gives access to the master degree courses of the LM-7, LM-8 and LM-9 classes, which in Padua are implemented as Food Biotechnologies, Industrial Biotechnologies, Pharmaceutical Biotechnologies and Medical Biotechnologies, according to the modalities that will be indicated in the specific admission notices.
