The PhD in Mathematics belongs to the Department of Mathematics "Tullio Levi-Civita", which has a long tradition, about one hundred members and offers a wide spectrum of research topics, from the most abstract to the most applied.

Course objectives
The PhD in Mathematical Sciences aims to provide its students with a qualified preparation that directs them towards a professional or academic career in the area of Mathematics and its applications, and to provide the necessary skills to carry out highly qualified research activities, including interdisciplinary ones, at universities and public or private bodies. The quality of our doctoral students from previous cycles is evidenced by their excellent placement both in the international academic field and in the workplace. The Department of Mathematics "Tullio Levi-Civita" has about a hundred researchers, covering many research areas of modern mathematics. This allows the PhD in Mathematical Sciences to offer not only a start to research, but also a wide degree courses and seminars. Our doctoral students can therefore familiarize themselves with techniques and concepts from different fields of mathematics, thus receiving a broad and open cultural education.
Educational activities
The number of scholarships funded can vary from year to year, with an average of about ten. Each PhD student has a table in the Department's offices dedicated to the PhD: this encourages interaction between young people and the creation of a lively and stimulating research environment.
The Department has extensive seminar activity and numerous international contacts. The degree courses include both courses on topics of broad interest and research-oriented courses on specific topics.
There are three types of activities in the Catalogue.
- Courses offered by the Doctoral School (= Doctoral Courses)
- Courses offered by one of its curricula.
- Other activities:
- selected courses offered by the Doctoral School in Information Engineering;
- selected courses offered by other Doctoral Schools or other Institutes;
- Reading Courses
Doctoral students - within the first two years - must attend at least six courses, passing the exam of at least four of these. For courses without examination, a short report contained in the report for admission to the following year is required. These educational activities are accompanied by training opportunities on transversal skills that take into account the specificity of the PhD in mathematics and possible employment opportunities, such as active involvement in dissemination and orientation events and themed meetings with agreed topics, from year to year, based on the requests and needs of the students themselves.
Research lines
The Ph.D. in Mathematical Sciences offers two PhD curricula, one in Mathematics and one in Computational Mathematics. The PhD offers highly qualified training and research opportunities in all research areas represented by the Department, which include Algebra, Geometry, Mathematical Analysis, Mathematical Logic, and Mathematical Physics for the Mathematics area, and Mathematical Finance, Numerical Analysis, Optimization, and Probability for the Computational Mathematics area.

Career opportunities include:
- Researcher and University Lecturer or in research institutions.
- Banks, insurance: Expert in financial analysis and forecasting, quantitative assessment of the risk associated with productive and/or financial investment and definition of resource allocation policies.
- Expert in distribution logistics for the optimization of activities such as customer service, demand forecasting, communication management, inventory management, material handling, scheduling, location of factories and warehouses, transport (including airports) and distribution, warehousing and storage.
- Expert in the processing and management of large amounts of data using the mathematical tools of Data Science in companies, public bodies, or research centers.
- Expert and Developer of numerical methods and applied modeling in companies, public and private bodies and research centers.
- Expert in mathematics education.
