Doctorates in cotutelle
The dissertation co-tutorship consists of a collaboration between two universities from two different countries aimed at creating a training course for students enrolled in research doctorates active in the partner universities. This collaboration provides that the PhD student carries out his/her dissertation work at the two locations for alternating periods, preferably of equivalent duration and in any case for a minimum period of six months under the supervision of two supervisors, one for each campus. The training course ends with a single exam following which a diploma (double or joint) recognized in both countries is awarded.
At the basis of the co-supervision there is the stipulation of an agreement between the Universities: unless a framework agreement is specifically requested by the partner campus, a specific agreement (nominative) is sufficient for each doctoral student or doctoral student who decides to undertake this path.
Currently, the CRUI has signed framework agreements for the co-supervision of dissertations with France, Germany, Spain and Switzerland. In the case of co-supervision with universities belonging to one of these countries, it is therefore only necessary to stipulate the specific (nominative) agreement of the PhD.
The requirements for starting the stipulation of the agreements are:
- enrolment in a PhD at the University of Padova or at a foreign university;
- acceptance by those who supervise at the home campus and by those who could supervise at the host campus;
- approval of the competent body of the PhD course of the University of Padova.
From the 38th cycle, Guidelines are available for the Activation of co-tutorship paths which also specify:
- Timing for the request for activation of co-tutorship
- Documentation to be attached to the activation request
- minimum content of the Individual Agreement
- Reporting duties of those who do the PhD in cotutelle
For the period of stay abroad, doctoral students who benefit from a scholarship can apply for an increase in the scholarship for a stay abroad.
In addition, doctoral students in co-supervision of dissertation with French or German universities can access funding from the Italian-French University (in particular the Vinci Call for applications) and the Italian-German University.
