Andrea Pitacco, graduated in Agricultural Science and Technology with full marks and honors, began his career in 1983 as a technician at the Institute of Arboriculture of the University of Padua. University researcher since 1994, in 2002 he became associate professor and in 2018 full professor, in the Scientific Sector AGR/03 (General arboriculture and tree crops), a role he currently holds at the Department of Agronomy, Animals, Food, Natural Resources and Environment of the University of Padua.

During his activity he has been involved in various research topics, in the context of projects financed by the National Research Council, by the Ministry of Education, University and Research, by the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies, by the Ministry of the Environment, the Veneto Region, the Emilia-Romagna Region, the Autonomous Province of Trento, the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Region, the Ager-Agri-food and Research Foundation and the European Union.

His research activity has always been characterized by a remarkable interdisciplinarity, often transcending the area of woody crop cultivation. He anticipated many issues that have become very topical over time, such as plant ecophysiology, the study of the relationships between agricultural crops and the environment - today crucial for interpreting the impacts of climate change and managing its mitigation -, micrometeorology applied to tree systems, the development of sustainable cultivation techniques, the study of the carbon sequestration capacity of agricultural crops and in particular of orchards and vineyards, the enhancement of the ecosystem services of crops. Currently, his research activity is focused on the study of Vegetation-Atmosphere Interactions, with particular regard to the theoretical and experimental characterization of turbulent transport processes in discontinuous plant canopies.

He has often faced methodological problems, contributing to the development of innovative experimental techniques that have become widespread today. In particular, he contributed to the development of micrometeorological techniques applied to the study of the energy, water and carbon balance of agricultural crops and natural surfaces in general. He actively participated in the activity of the working group on "Instrumental and Methodical Problems of Land Surface Measurements" of the European Geophysical Society, which coordinated the international EBEX-2000 surface energy balance measurement campaign. These activities culminated in his active participation in the European Strategic Research Infrastructure dedicated to monitoring the greenhouse gas balance on agricultural and forest surfaces ICOS (Integrated Carbon Observation System), in which Italy participates including the observatory on a vineyard he set up and is currently managing. In collaboration with highly qualified groups, he has participated in numerous international measurement campaigns: IX Italian Expedition in Antardide (1993), MAP-Riviera (Switzerland, 1999), EBEX-2000 (California, 2000), WATERUSE (Portugal and Puglia, 2000-03), NamTEX (Namibia, 2020).
