Alessandra Petrina (laurea in Lingue e Letterature Straniere at the University of Padova; M.A. in Combined Historical Studies, Warburg Institute; PhD in English Studies, University of Florence) is Professor of English Literature at the Università degli Studi di Padova, Italy, where she is also the Vice-Rector's Advisor for Europpe and Erasmus. She was Brian Hewson Crawford Fellowship at the Warburg Institute in 2002; Visiting Fellow at the University of London in 2006; and Visiting Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford, in 2007.
Her research focuses primarily on late-medieval and early modern intellectual history, and on Anglo-Italian cultural relations. She has published, among others, The Kingis Quair (1997), Cultural Politics in Fifteenth-century England. The Case of Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester (2004), and Machiavelli in the British Isles. Two Early Modern Translations of the Prince (2009). She has edited a number of volumes, such as Queen and Country. The Relation between the Monarch and the People in the Development of the English Nation (Lang, 2011); The Medieval Translator – Traduire au Moyen Age 15. In principio fuit interpres (Brepols, 2013); with John Law, Between Italy and the British Isles. Dialogue and Confrontation from the Dawn of Vernacular Literatures to the Seventeenth Century, special issue of Textus 24 (2011); with Alessandro Arienzo, Machiavellian Encounters in Tudor and Stuart England. Literary and Political Influences from the Reformation to the Restoration (Ashgate, 2013); with David Rundle, The Italian University in the Renaissance, special issue of Renaissance Studies 27 (2013); and with Ian Johnson, The Impact of Latin Culture on Medieval and Early Modern Scottish Writing (Kalamazoo: Medieval Institute Publications, 2018). She is currently working on the early modern English translations of Petrarch’s Triumphi, and on early modern marginalia.
Between 2009 and 2018 she organised the following international conferences: Role and Rule. History and Power on Stage (London, Shakespeare’s Globe, February 2009); The University in the Renaissance (Università degli Studi di Padova, April 2010); Medieval Translator 2010. In Principio Fuit Interpres (Università degli Studi di Padova, July 2010); Natio Scota – The Thirteenth International Conference on Medieval and Renaissance Scottish Language and Literature (Università degli Studi di Padova, July 2011); Acquisition through Translation (Università degli Studi di Padova, May 2017). Between 2012 and 2018, as President of IASEMS (Italian Association for Shakespearean and Early Modern Studies), she organised the annual conference.
She is Co-editor of Scottish Literary Review; European editor of Renaissance Studies; member of the editorial board of the MHRA Tudor and Stuart Translations Series; of the journal Memoria di Shakespeare; of the series The Medieval Translator (Brepols).
