Profile
Teacher of Latin and Greek literature in high schools from 1976 to 2018. From 1980 to 1982 he taught Greek and Latin grammar at the University of Venice. In Padua, where he had already been an exerciser at the end of the 70s, he taught basic Greco (2004-16), Written test of Greek (2010-16); Basic Latin (2016-23), Latin Written Test (2016-23), Latin Didactics (2019-21). In 2022-23 he taught Latin to non-European religious in the Institute of Pastoral Liturgy at the monastery of Santa Giustina in Padua. Graduated in Classical Literature at the University of Padua with a dissertation on History of the Greek language on scholia at the Iliad (speaker Luigi Bottin), he obtained a postgraduate diploma in Classical Philology with a dissertation on Greek parody (supervisors Oddone Longo and Filippo Maria Pontani). His interests span ancient rhetoric and stylistics, the classification of styles and the terminoliga in which he expresses himself, Greek and Latin sectoral lexicons, and the role of metaphors in the language of philosophers. Since the mid-80s he has also been involved in Latin teaching: from this interest and from the collaboration with Maurizio Bettini were born both the complete course of Latin language in three volumes (La Grammatica latina, 1999) published by La Nuova Italia of Florence, and the guide to Latin language and civilization in two volumes published by the same publisher in 2002 with the title Tempora et Mores. On the side of Greek teaching, in 2023 he participated with some grammatical contributions (hypothetical period, prepositions) in the Greco publishing project. Lingua, storia e cultura di una grande civiltà promoted by Corriere della Sera. Both in his teaching activity and in his role as an updater, he is committed to the adoption of a syntactic model in the course unit of ancient languages. His interest in the use of computers in the teaching of Latin and Greek dates back to 1988. Connoisseur of some of the most popular programming languages (C++, Visual Basic, VBScript, Javascript, Asp, Php, SQL) he has developed many applications aimed at promoting the learning of languages, classic and non-classical. He has held courses and spoken at conferences both on the use of computers in language education and on the programming of software intended to facilitate it. His main interest lies in the integration between the software that allows the student to navigate in a hypertextual way and the one that controls his knowledge and ability to solve problems. Of the activities promoted in this sector, interventions published over more than twenty years offer an overview (Software & Libertà in Arachnes Netz, Steiner, Stuttgart 2000, The software for language training: solutions within everyone's reach, Roma 2006, Teaching Latin in the time of Covid", Brescia 2022). Its applications have been in use for some time to manage and monitor the exercise of participants in Basic Latin courses, and Latin written test. He is currently engaged in the development of applications to facilitate the syntactic and semantic analysis of texts, mainly on a valence basis. In November 2020 he was commissioned to develop on behalf of the University of Padua the project of a MOOC (massive open online course) of Latin Lingua for the benefit of students who have to start studying Latin from scratch. What has been developed so far will be made available to 2023-24 freshmen.
