COMMON

CENTRALITY of living in the mountains between OPPORTUNITIES and RISKS. Geography and landscape of the Dolomites World Heritage Site (system 5, Comelico Dolomites)

Since 2009 the Dolomites have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List for the spectacular landscapes and the extraordinary geological and geomorphological conformation. The unique landscapes of the valley floors are the result of millennial processes of adaptation of the settled communities, which today are facing great challenges, due to the effects of climate change, marginality, depopulation and the excesses of tourist exploitation.
The 2026 edition of COMMON is part of Orizzonte Montagna under the patronage of the University of Padova and the management of Fondazione G.Angelini TRAINING COURSE DI GEOGRAPHY ON THE DOLOMITE DI S UNESCO HERITAGE 2026 - Fondazione Giovanni Angelini

The course is aimed at teachers, trainers, guides, companions, future professionals interested in learning about the Dolomites.

  • Friday 3 July (S. Pietro di Cadore campus): face-to-face lessons and seminars on the themes of the mountain-community relationship and introduction to excursions);
  • Saturday 4 July: excursion (Ring route in the Popèra Group, Comelico Dolomites, with departure and arrival at the Selvapiana "Italo Lunelli" Refuge in Selva Piana in the Municipality of Comelico Superiore. Elevation gain about 1000 meters, length about 13 km);
  • Sunday 5 July: excursion to the municipalities of Santo Stefano di Cadore, San Pietro di Cadore and San Nicolò di Comelico and moments of meeting with local actors and operators active in the agro-forestry, tourism, social, manufacturing fields.

The immersive dimension will be enhanced with stops for the recognition and interpretation of geological structures, relief forms, vegetation formations, characteristics of the anthropic landscape, elements of the local heritage and its enhancement. Willingness to actively participate is required. For Saturday's activity it is necessary to be adequately prepared for the excursion in a mountain environment. The course is held in collaboration with the G. Angelini Foundation (BL), according to the aims of the UNESCO Dolomites Foundation.

The course proposes a contact with the Dolomite environment, in the variety of conditions encountered between the valley floor and high-altitude areas. Particular attention will be paid to the dynamics that characterize mountain communities and to the signs left in the landscape in its being a "common good" for its permanent and temporary inhabitants.

Observations on the forms of the physical landscape, linked to the history of the earth and the evolution of the climate, with attention to the vegetational aspects, and on the forms of the anthropic landscape, with attention to the elements of the local heritage and its enhancement, will be integrated. Space will be given to the in-depth study of the meanings related to the Unesco recognition of the Dolomite heritage. A direct knowledge of the contexts is proposed, a reflection on being a community in the Dolomites, a methodology for conscious frequentation of the mountains.

The main topics:

  • the signs and the anthropic landscape,
  • the forms of the physical landscape,
  • the exploitation of resources,
  • the challenges of climate change in mountain contexts,
  • the enhancement of heritage,
  • hospitality and tourism.
