Alias careers

The alias career, established in 2013, aims to provide female and male students of the University of Padua with guarantees of respect, dignity, and privacy by implementing protective measures for those who need to use, within the University, a chosen name different from their registered name, as an expression of their gender self-determination. 

The request to activate the alias career may be submitted by people enrolled in bachelor’s degree courses, master’s degree courses, single-cycle master’s degree courses, and all post-graduate educational pathways of the University of Padua. In May 2022, the University approved new guidelines for activating the alias career, with a view to procedural simplification and greater protection of the confidentiality of transgender applicants.

Alias career activation procedures

To activate an alias career, you must send the following by email to alias.studenti@unipd.it:

• Alias career activation request form;
• identity document;
• a passport photo

Activation of the alias career

Once the application has been received, a confidentiality agreement is prepared between the applicant and the rector or the Rector, specifying all obligations and responsibilities arising from the use of the alias career – exclusively within the University – alongside the original one.

Once the agreement has been signed by both parties, the Student Careers Office creates the alias career by assigning new temporary personal details chosen by the applicant, which are transitional and cannot be made permanent.

The University issues a new email account and university badge under the new personal details, which are valid exclusively for internal career-related acts such as, by way of example:

• enrolment/booking for university exams, through the online procedures using the university portal uniweb;
• taking exams, as well as their registration if passed;
• access to University premises such as classrooms where lectures are held, libraries, study rooms, canteen, etc.

The alias career is in any case inseparably associated with the original one, already activated at the time of enrolment, and linked to the applicant's personal details. It also coexists with the original one for as long as the actual career remains active, except in the event of requests for interruption, or until any final judgment rectifying the attribution of sex is issued by the competent judicial authority.

The Student Careers Office undertakes to carry out periodic updates related to the alias career, recording them periodically also in the official career (indicatively within the first week of each month), so that the latter is always up to date and can be used externally.

If the competent judicial authority authorizes the rectification of the attribution of sex, the gender change will take effect on the applicant's actual career and, consequently, the alias career will be closed.
