The General Archive of the University deals with the reception, classification and correct management of all the documentary material of the University of Padua, in compliance with the regulations, deontological and quality standards and good practices, recognized nationally and internationally.

The General Archives of the University are responsible for the management of the protocol, which is the set of procedures by which documents are processed from a legal-managerial point of view. The basic elements of the protocol are contained in the protocol register: it is a public document that certifies the date of receipt and dispatch of a document, and is capable of producing legal effects in favour or to the detriment of the parties.

The need to have a valid and homogeneous archival system has always been considered of primary importance in the University, leading to the launch of a series of projects aimed at standardizing and simplifying the methods of archiving and consulting administrative documents: an example of this is the Archives Project, which in turn includes the Titulus 97 projects ,  Thesis 1999 and Studium 2000. In addition, in 1994 an Archives Commission, composed of professors and archivists, was appointed for the recognition  and adequate classification of the University's documentary heritage.

The rules on the archive, protocol and administrative documentation of the University are contained in the specific Regulations.

Following the reform of the university sector (Law 240/2010 and new statutes), it was necessary to revise the classification plan for Italian universities Titulus 97, drawn up at the time by an inter-institutional working group, in order to adapt it to the changes that had taken place.

The new owner, in force since 1 January 2013, in addition to incorporating the updates deriving from the new institutional and organisational structure, unifies the two previous models into one. Therefore, it can be used by both central and peripheral structures, with obvious advantages for the interoperability of systems
documents of the PP. AA., representing a tool for the organization of university archives since their formation.
