Scholars at Risk (SAR) is an international network of universities founded in 1999 at the University of Chicago, currently campused in New York, to promote academic freedom and protect scholars whose lives are in danger or whose work is severely compromised. SAR is currently part of the Network for Education and Academic Rights (NEAR) and the Scholars Rescue Fund (SRF)-Institute of International Education (IIE). It currently comprises 450 universities in 40 countries.
Adhesions to SAR

The University of Padova is part of SAR Italia, a partnership between Italian universities and research institutes. In setting up SAR Italia, the governance structures of the member universities, students and all staff send a strong signal of solidarity to scholars and university institutions that, around the world, find themselves in situations where academic freedom is restricted, and research, course unit and training activities repressed. SAR Italia operates through the sharing of information, the exchange of good practices, collaboration in protection and advocacy activities and in the organization of awareness-raising events.
The universities that are part of the international network are members of SAR Italia.

For the period 2019-2021, the coordination of SAR Italia is carried out by the University of Padua and Trento , which in recent years have already started reception and advocacy practices. The Board includes the same two institutions, together with the Universities of Cagliari and Trieste and the Scuola Normale Superiore.
