A university spin-off is a limited company founded by researchers to commercially exploit the results of their studies and their scientific and technological expertise. 
From a legal perspective, a spin-off is an ordinary for-profit company; researchers, by becoming shareholders in a business, take part in the opportunities and risks typically associated with entrepreneurship.
