Open Access is a movement within academia to foster the sharing and growth of knowledge through open access to research results. Research papers deposited in institutional archives and published in Open Access journals are read by a wider audience, and therefore cited more, thus increasing the visibility and impact of the author.

The Open Access movement is supported by the European Community and, in Italy, by the CRUI Commission for University Libraries.

The University of Padova promotes open access to scientific literature, and is the first signatory of the Messina Declaration (the document of adhesion of Italian universities to the Berlin Declaration, the formal act of initiation of the Open Access movement).
