The University of Padua offers 50 scholarships to support Afghan students who find themselves or may possibly find themselves in a dangerous situation following the worsening of the political situation in Afghanistan.

Amount of scholarship: fee-waiver + €12,000 scholarship (gross amount) per a.y. The only amount to be paid by beneficiary students for each year consists of an admission fee, corresponding to the regional tax and marca da bollo. No other reimbursement (travel tickets, insurance or other expenses) is included in the scholarship.

Duration: the scholarship has a maximum duration of:

  • 1 academic year for short-specialisation degree programme (“Master universitario”) reserved exclusively for students already pre-enrolled at the University
  • 2 continuous years for Master’s degree candidates;
  • 3 continuous years for Bachelor’s and Single-Cycle degree candidates.

After the duration indicated above, beneficiary students will be required to cover their own expenses as well as tuition fees until graduation.

Who can apply: you can be considered for the selection procedure, under penalty of exclusion, if you meet the requirements below.

  • international students with Afghan citizenship residing outside Italy already succesfully pre-enrolled to the University’s degree programmes for the a.y. 2021/22;

OR

  • students with Afghan citizenship enrolled in a.y. 2020/21 and finalising their second-year enrolment;

OR

  • students who fled from Afghanistan by airlift or other means as a result of the political deterioration in Afghanistan, not pre-enrolled at another Italian university, and admitted, as a result of the extraordinary selection process, to the degree programmes of the  University of Padua for the 2021/2022 academic year

How to apply: details on the application procedure are specified in the call for application according to the applicant’s status

  • All the students fulfilling the above-mentioned requirements who applied for enrolment for the 2021/22 academic year are automatically admitted to selection. Neither a separate application form nor further documents are needed in addition to those required for applying for the chosen degree programme;
  • The students enrolled at the University of Padua who meet the requirements above should apply via email to unipd4afghanistan@unipd.it, enclosing a letter of motivation. Closing date for application is September 27, 2021;
  • The students who fled from Afghanistan following the political deterioration in Afghanistan should apply for the  extraordinary selection via the apply.unipd.it platform.The selection is intended for all the degree programmes of the University of Padua and will be open on the date of signature of this call. To access the degree programmes with national-based selection for the 2021/22 academic year, students should have already ranked conveniently in the national ranking lists. The students who cannot provide proof of their entry qualification may attend an interview to be carried out jointly by the enrolment officer and the members of the Committee. They will be interviewed about the contents and learning outcomes of the degree programme, the books used and the exams. Interviewees will also be asked about the study method of the home institution and the projects carried out during the study period.

Selection criteria: All applications will be evaluated by a specific University Committee both for the purposes of admission to degree programmes as well as for the assignment of scholarships. The latter will be awarded by the Committee to the most deserving candidates, on the basis of the quality and results of their previous academic career, linguistic competence and motivation.

Selection results: The results of the selection and the awarding of the scholarships will be made available on the University’s website:

  • from October 1, 2021, as for students already admitted to a degree programme following previous selection and  students already enrolled at the University of Padua;  
  • from the date of receipt of the admission letter, as for students taking part in the extraordinary selection

Acceptance: selected candidates will receive a specific communication from the Admissions and Welcome Unit of the Global Engagement Office indicating the methods and timing for accepting the financial benefit and according to the modalities indicated in the call for applications. To receive the scholarship, you must not benefit from other grants and be able to comply with the conditions to finalise your enrolment at the University of Padua.

Payments arrangements and maintenance requirements: the scholarship  will be paid in three (3) instalments during the academic year upon achievement of the merit requirements indicated in the Call for applications.

The merit conditions required to maintain the scholarship also in the following academic years are detailed in the Call for applications.

Revocation: the University of Padua will revoke your scholarship if:

  • you do not obtain at least 20 ECTS by November 30, 2022
  • you decide to transfer to another University or withdraw from your studies.

In the above cases, you shall refund the amount of the scholarship already received.
