The registration of domain names for the University of Padua is governed by the "University Policy for the assignment and registration of domain names"

Types of domain names that can be registered

The University structures must request the assignment of a single 3rd level domain (type nomestruttura.unipd.it) to be used for the institutional website that must reside on the University network. All information content to be conveyed via the web (educational, research and related to technology transfer) must be hosted within the institutional web address of the structure.

For activities common to more than one University structure, 4th level or higher subdomains must be used on the 3rd level domain of the related structures (type attività.nomestruttura.unipd.it).

The University structures that are coordinators or partners of IT projects or services with other public or private entities (including other universities), have the right to request authorization to register a 2nd level domain name on the TLDs .it, .eu or others (type nomeprogetto.it) that is representative of the project, event or IT service (e.g. database).

Please note that the structures can alternatively proceed with the registration of a 4th level domain name of type nomeprogetto.nomestruttura.unipd.it in the 3rd level domain of the coordinating or partner structure.

It should be noted that in the event that it is required to register - or acquire an existing domain - that points outside the University network, the security rules indicated by the University must be respected.

How to choose a domain name

The name assigned to a site or service must be its identification. In fact, it represents the way of access to the contents of which the site is the bearer in the world, it must recall its structure, be easily understandable to all, evoking its contents in a logic of immediacy. The formulation of the naming rules, the verification of the contents and the consistency of the names with the communication logic is entrusted to the Naming Authority, a role for the University carried out by the Communication and Marketing Area, in agreement with the Rector's Delegate for institutional communication.

The subsequent task of registering domain names is the responsibility of the Registration Authority, which operates according to the guidelines established by Naming: the Registration Authority is entrusted with verifying the technical consistency of the applications for the assignment of names and the technical registration procedures. The role of Registration Authority for the University is carried out by the IT and Telematic Services Area.

Procedure

The request must be submitted exclusively by the Director of the structure concerned by filling in a ticket in the Central Administration helpdesk in the "University Naming Authority" queue, within which a reference name must also be indicated who will follow the subsequent  technical procedure.

If it is a new domain, it is necessary to indicate with a brief description the purpose for which the domain is requested and, if applicable, the expiration date.
