About myself

My name is Samantha and I'm enrolled in the Master's in Sustainable Chemistry and Technologies for Circular Economy. I hold a bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, and I'm very enthusiastic about everything related to sustainability and how science can be a powerful tool to reduce environmental impact. I'm also passionate about second-hand fashion, and I love discovering new cultures through their food, as well as sharing my own culture and traditions with my friends.

Why did you choose the University of Padua and our degree programme in Sustainable Chemistry and Technologies for Circular Economy? How did you learn about our institution?

Sustainability has always been important for me, and during my bachelor’s degree I realized the impact and importance that science has on the environment. I really wanted to gain a better understanding and hands-on approach on this field, which sadly is not seen as a priority in my home country, that’s why I decided to study abroad, and after searching for different master’s degrees in Europe, when I first read the curricula of the Master’s in Sustainable Chemistry and Technologies for Circular Economy, I immediately felt that it was the perfect master for me, that's why I’m in Italy. I first learned about the University of Padua through postgraduate fairs abroad while I was still in Mexico and later deepened my understanding through online research.

What are the main features of your degree programme?

One of the main features I like in this degree programme is its strong interdisciplinary approach. It combines different fields such as chemistry, economics and legal aspects related to sustainability and circular economy. It encourages critical thinking beyond a single discipline, which is essential when addressing complex environmental and industrial challenges.
Another key feature is the need of completing an internship in a company, either in Italy or abroad. I find this aspect particularly valuable, as it provides the perfect opportunity to open our professional horizons.

Is there any class/subject that has stood out to you so far?

One class that has really stood out for me so far is Operations and Supply Chain Management. With my background in Chemical Engineering, I initially did not realize how crucial these areas are for a company’s sustainability efforts. This course opened my eyes to the impact that efficient operations and well-designed supply chains can have on reducing waste, optimizing resource use, and minimizing environmental footprint.

What advice would you give to prospective students when it comes to preparing a successful application?

My main advice to prospective students is do not be afraid to tell your story. Many people worry if they don’t come from a well-known university or if their English isn’t perfect, but what truly matters is your motivation, your experiences, and how your background connects with the master’s programme.
Even if your background seems different, you can highlight transferable skills, your motivation for sustainability, and your commitment to learning. Personal stories make applications stand out because they show your authentic self.
Regarding English, it is essential to meet the minimum language requirements. However, don’t worry too much about being perfect. Once you start your studies and interact with peers and professors, your language skills improve quickly. What counts more is your willingness to learn, participate, and engage with the material.

What advice would you give to students thinking of studying in Italy?

Italy, and particularly Padova, is the best city to have an international experience, the city has the perfect size, not too big or too small, and is vibrant with students from all over the world. My best advice is to be open minded and ready to create new memories, don’t be afraid of going out of your comfort zone and be prepared to connect with different cultures.

What do you do when you’re not studying? How do you like to spend your free time?

In my free time, I enjoy doing sports and trying new things, especially if they are free. I have practiced rowing, taken cooking classes, attended concerts, visited museums. If I’m not joining any activity I simply love to walk around the city, its architecture and vibe is simply lovely.
