"Coming from the other side of the world I had to make sure that I felt comfortable and safe in my choice. The Global Engagement Office and the International Desk were able to provide this for me "
About myself
I am an international student here at the University of Padova studying my bachelor’s degree in Psychological Science! I am originally from Ecuador but have lived in Panama City, Panama for almost my entire life. I am currently finishing my junior year here in UNIPD and looking forward to exploring Social Psychology and Health. In my free time I am always with my friends at the City Centre or working on an extracurricular activity like Enactus UNIPD. I am also interested in creative affairs like music or digital creation and finance!
Why did you choose the University of Padua and our degree programme in Psychological Science? How did you learn about our institution?
Unipd has one of the best full English-taught Psychology degrees in Europe, creating a holistic approach to the different branches of psychology. The curriculum provides a broad approach to both biological and social components of this career while still providing, support and trust to their students.
Additionally, living in Padova provided me with an opportunity to immerse myself in a different culture and make a city that feels so far my second home.
What aspects of our university’s culture or values have resonated with you the most?
Something that was crucial for me as an international student was support and trust. Coming from the other side of the world I had to make sure that I felt comfortable and safe in my choice. The Global Engagement Office and the International Desk were able to provide this for me through the application process, answering my question and to this day providing me with contacts and support throughout my career.
Furthermore, the commitment to constant research-focused improvement and innovation gives me a sense of progress and opportunity. Specifically in the field of Psychology this was a sign of excellence and international involvement.
What are the main features of your degree programme?
Some of the main features of BPS that I enjoy the most is the aspect of free choice classes mixed with core components. This degree provides an amp view of psychology while still planting curiosity from these fields so one can further discover and get involved in research or extra opportunities. As mentioned previously, the entire degree is English-taught and open to a mixed modality between self-study and interactive lectures.
Furthermore, we focus quite a lot on international mobility and responsibility, constantly striving for a more education and broad view of innovation and research. This includes anatomical labs, collaborations with other universities in Europe and the world or even seminars.
What advice would you give to prospective students when it comes to preparing for the entry test?
For the entry exam I would focus on practicing! Repeating questions, exercises and striving for critical thinking skills. I believe focus is drawn to show ALL your skills in Math, Science and Academic English. Be prepared to give it your all in these three aspects and focus on the logic portion with objective analysis and a cold mind.
More than anything it is important to trust your knowledge and preparation, a good sense of direction and motivation will get you further than imagined!
What advice would you give to students thinking of studying in Italy? How have you settled in here?
Do it! It was terrifying at first to think I would be able to make a life so far and different from what I am used to, but I could not be prouder of my growth as a student and a person. Settling is hard, but once you are comfortable you will be able to create a space that is yours to explore. Padova provides stability and security while still being in the center of Veneto with almost unlimited traveling possibilities to Italy and the rest of Europe.
Slowly you will create a community, whether it is your classmates and friends or becoming a usual in your favorite coffee spot, it will come naturally with the right ambition.
What do you like to do when you are not studying? How do you like to spend your free time?
When I am not studying you will always see me in the city centre! Whether it is looking at the shops, going for ice-cream/coffee or even visiting some national landmarks I will be there with my friends.
Additionally, during the spring I will be outside most of the time, enjoying the weather at a park or next to Piovego, the river that flows through the city. Listening to music, talking with my friends or classmates or even working in some extracurricular activities, I take advantage of the amenities close to the faculty!
