About myself

My name is Heseong Chang, a fifth-year medical student at the University of Padova. Originally from South Korea, I came to Italy to pursue my medical studies and have greatly enjoyed my time in Padua. My goal is to become a skilled surgeon committed to providing high quality care to patients. In my free time, I enjoy cycling around Lake Garda, cooking, and attending music concerts.

Why did you choose the University of Padua and the Medicine and Surgery degree programme? How did you learn about our institution?

I chose the University of Padua for its long history and remarkable contribution in the development of modern medicine and its strong academic reputation. The Medicine and Surgery programme offers a strong scientific foundation with research opportunities and early clinical experience. I was also drawn to the city of Padova itself, as its location makes it easy to travel around Italy, and the cost of living is more affordable compared to other northern Italian cities. I discovered the programme through online search and, after careful consideration of several universities, decided that Padova was the ideal place to pursue my medical studies.

What are the main features of your degree programme?

The Medicine and Surgery programme at the UNIPD offers a comprehensive medical education that integrates theory, research, and practical training. Students have opportunities for early exposure to clinical practice from the first year through hospital rotations, allowing them to connect theoretical knowledge with real medical experience. The programme’s international environment, made by a diverse student community, forms a dynamic and collaborative learning atmosphere.

Is there any class or subject that has stood out to you so far?

General Surgery and Gastroenterology have been particularly interesting courses for me. They were among the first clinical subjects in my course, and thanks to our dedicated professors, I had the opportunity to observe medical procedures and surgeries in the hospital. The professors’ passion and professionalism made the learning experience even more inspiring. The combination of well-structured lectures and clinical activities made these courses especially rewarding and memorable.

What advice would you give to prospective students when it comes to preparing for the entry test?

The IMAT exam requires a clear understanding of scientific concepts and the ability to solve questions efficiently under time pressure. My advice is to focus on mastering the scientific theories and concepts covered in the test (biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics). Online resources such as Khan Academy and standard textbooks can be very useful for learning these concepts. Practicing past papers is equally important. Repeat and review them multiple times until you can clearly explain the reasoning behind each question. Finally, develop strong time management skills, so you can complete all sections within the given time.

What advice would you give to students thinking of studying in Italy?

As the saying goes, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” Adaptability and an open mind are key. Living and studying in Italy is a highly valuable experience, but it also requires patience and flexibility. Administrative processes can sometimes take time, so staying organized and calm when handling paperwork is important. Embracing the local culture and keeping an open mind will help you integrate more easily, both academically and personally. Learning Italian is strongly recommended, even if your programme is taught in English, it makes daily life smoother and allows you to connect more deeply with the local community.

What do you do when you’re not studying? How do you like to spend your free time?

In my free time, I enjoy cycling, and there are many beautiful bike paths around Padova, from the Euganean Hills (Colli Euganei) to Lake Garda. It is a great way to refresh myself after studying and explore Italy’s landscapes. I also love cooking and experimenting with different cuisines at home. Italy offers diverse and high-quality cooking ingredients, which make cooking especially enjoyable. In addition, I often attend music concerts and cultural events in Padova. The city provides many opportunities for students to experience cultural life, often with affordable student ticket prices.
