Student of Earth Dynamics

"My experience at the University of Padua has been really positive so far. I’ve found the people welcoming and supportive, which made settling in easy. I also really appreciate the strong academic standards, but what stands out is the good work-life balance."

About myself

I’m currently a first-year master’s student in the Earth Dynamics program. I completed my bachelor’s degree in the United States at University of Michigan in geology and was working in the mining and minerals exploration industries for five years before deciding to pursue my master’s degree at UNIPD.

Why did you choose the University of Padua and our degree programme in Earth Dynamics? How did you learn about our institution?

I chose the University of Padua and the Earth Dynamics programme because of the university’s strong scientific reputation, historic legacy, and emphasis on geoscience research and field-based learning. The opportunity to study in English while experiencing a different culture was also very important to me, as I value gaining an international perspective on education and research. Additionally, the University of Padua offers a high-quality education at an affordable cost. I first learned about the programme while researching international geoscience master’s programmes online.

What are the main features of your degree programme?

The Earth Dynamics programme at the University of Padua features an interdisciplinary mix of lectures, laboratory work, and field trips, ensuring a strong integration of theory and practice. I was especially drawn to its focus on understanding Earth processes through both theoretical and practical approaches. The programme combines disciplines such as tectonics, geophysics, and geomorphology, while lab sessions and fieldwork provide hands-on experience that connects classroom concepts with real geological systems, supporting a well-rounded geoscience education.

How has your experience been so far? What aspects of our university’s culture or values have resonated with you the most?

My experience at the University of Padua has been really positive so far. I’ve found the people welcoming and supportive, which made settling in easy. I also really appreciate the strong academic standards, but what stands out is the good work-life balance, which leaves time for friends and family alongside studying.

What advice would you give to prospective students when it comes to preparing a successful application?

My main advice is to be honest and take your time when preparing your application. Clearly explain your real motivations and avoid generic statements. It’s important to thoroughly research the program, read course descriptions, and attend webinars to understand what it offers. Be specific about your previous experience, using concrete examples, and clearly link this to your future goals. A strong application shows a clear connection between your background, interests, and how the program fits your academic and career path.

What advice would you give to students thinking of studying in Italy? How have you settled in here?

My advice to students thinking of studying in Italy is to be prepared for an adjustment period. Even if courses are in English, basic Italian helps a lot in daily life, and small cultural differences can feel significant at first. Administrative tasks can also take time, so patience is key. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and keep going when things feel discouraging. It took me about six months to truly settle in. Building routines, staying active, and making a mix of friends really helped. Try new things and travel as much as possible, but remember it’s ok to do things in your comfort zone, make some friends from your home country, and stay in sometimes too!

What do you like to do when you are not studying? How do you like to spend your free time?

When I’m not studying, I like to spend my free-time hanging out with friends, walking around the city, trying local foods, and getting out in nature, especially hiking in the Colli Euganei or going to the beach! I’ve also really enjoyed exploring some of the more unique and unknown towns of Italy or just having relaxed and low-key days when I need them.
