Characteristics and objectives
The Master's Degree programme focuses on the study of the ancient world, in particular of the graeco-roman culture and the extraordinary importance it embodies in Western civilization to our day. Students deepen their knowledge of the graeco-roman culture itself, in particular of its literary and historical heritage in the broadest sense, but also of its reception (Nachleben) in the medieval, modern and contemporary ages. The critical study of Greek and Latin literary texts, of their context, of their transmission, is complemented by the learning of research methods relating to historiographic, literary, documentary, epigraphic and legal sources. The linguistic, philological, literary and historical disciplines of the classical world, also refined in their technical and theoretical aspects, offer students the tools to fully understand the ancient world and to proceed independently in the in-depth study of all its aspects. The constant attention to the historical-cultural context involves related disciplines, capable of ensuring an overall frame of reference, such as archaeology, philosophy, oriental studies.
