Measuring the world (Misurare il mondo) is the theme of the 2024 CICAP Festival, which aims to explore the concept of measurement under the different aspects, from practice in the strict sense to what is not measurable, from everyday life to its social and cultural implications.

Science starts from observation and the need to interpret the world. The first step is to understand what you see from a qualitative perspective and measure it. We must identify quantities under a work of description and definition within the elements that make up reality. A task that requires sharing a language and a method. Once the quantities have been defined and measured, we can investigate the relationships with which they interact, formulate hypotheses, make predictions, and verify reliability.

Measurements help us discover new connections, identify errors, and find the best path for the future. They tell us what our limits are and what our place is in the universe and on the only planet we have.

Misurare il mondo takes place in Padua from 11 to 13 October, preceded by CICAP Fest Edu from 7 to 11 October with a schedule dedicated to educators and schools.

A group of scientists from the University of Padua and the Veneto Institute of Molecular Medicine (VIMM), in collaboration with University College London (UCL), have managed to create mechanical force sensors directly in the developing brain and the spinal cord of chicken embryos.

The study Quantifying mechanical forces during vertebrate morphogenesis published in the prestigious journal Nature Materials, opens new ways to understand and prevent congenital malformations such as spina bifida which affect one child in 1,000 born in Europe.

Although they have been studied for decades, the entire spectrum of these malformations cannot be explained by molecular and genetic studies. A complementary path has therefore been identified in the study of the physical and mechanical parameters of tissues during embryonic development. Force fields produced during the various phases of embryonic development are crucial in the formation of organs and anatomical systems, studying them carries technical problems linked to the difficulty of acting on embryos. A typical example in which mechanics acts and is fundamental concerns the formation of the neural tube, which will give rise to the central nervous system.

To overcome this challenge, a study conducted by Eirini Maniou, Marie Sklodowska Curie Fellow at the University of Padua Associate Staff at UCL, Nicola Elvassore, professor at the University of Padua and scientific director of VIMM, and by Gabriel Galea, Principal Research Fellow at UCL has managed to 3D print tiny force sensors, about 0.1 mm wide, directly into the developing nervous system of chick embryos.

This made it possible to quantify the tiny forces – equal to about 1/10 the weight of human cilia – that embryos must generate to form the spinal cord.

For normal development of embryos, these forces must be greater than the negative forces that resist in the opposite direction. The identification of drugs capable of increasing the positive forces or decreasing the negative ones could help prevent congenital malformations such as spina bifida. Such drugs could complement the benefits of taking folic acid, a well-established prevention strategy before pregnancy.

The research team also demonstrated that the same technology can be applied to human stem cells as they specialize in spinal cord cells. In the future, this will allow stem cells from healthy donors and spina bifida patients to be compared, to understand why some people develop the condition.

Earning more than 2000 euros per month (which is 100 euros more than the average Italian), PhD research graduates from Padua enjoy a high employment rate and are increasingly coming from foreign universities.  Such as outlined by the most recent Almalaurea data, regarding PhD research graduates from the University of Padua.

The University of Padua continues to invest in doctoral training, given the fundamental role that these young people have in the university research system. The Almalaurea data gives us flattering results. Unipd remains attractive and effective in its training – states Massimiliano Zattin, vice-rector of the Doctorate at the University of Padua -. We will continue to insist on the path taken as the first round of selections for 479 doctoral positions has just ended, to which another hundred will be added through a call linked to NRRP resources which provides for co-financing by companies (deadline July 25). Currently, the overall number of doctoral students is around 2100, slightly lower than the number of structured teachers.

The Data

Data related to PhDs for 2023 show an average age of 30.9 years old at the time of obtaining qualification, significantly lower than other Italians with an average of 32.4. The international vocation is demonstrated not only by the growing percentage of doctors who graduated from a foreign university (14% against a national average of 11%) but also by the 59% of doctoral students who spent a period abroad, longer than 6 months for 26% of them (most popular countries: France, Germany, and the United States).

The research activity was carried out in well-organized groups in 83.1% (Italian average 78%), was supported by adequate funding in 88.4% of cases (well above the Italian average of 81%) and produced at least one publication for 85.5% of doctors (among these, 93.8% produced it in English).

These positive numbers translate into an employment rate one year after obtaining the qualification that reaches 91.1%, with an average net monthly salary of 2,012 euros, higher than the Italian average of 1,902 euros.

It should be noted that 85.5% of research doctors are employed in intellectual, scientific, and highly specialized professions, therefore fully congruent with their doctoral path. Ultimately, their degree focus was very effective for the work carried out in 76% of cases.
