Continually looking to enrich its educational offer, the University of Padua offers five new master's degree (LM) courses taught in English.  Two courses from the Department of Industrial Engineering (DII), two by the Department of Biology (DiBio), and one by the Department of Technology and Industrial Systems Management (DTG).

Scheduled for the next academic year, we have 60 active study courses in English (around a third of the total courses provided), of which 8 three-year and single-cycle degree courses and 52 master's degree courses. Nearly 80% of foreign students enrolled at the University of Padua attend a course in English. – comments Cristina Basso, vice-rector of International Relations -. We are characterized by particular attention to academic training capable of training researchers and professionals who are competitive at an international level. We recognize that scientific knowledge is an essential transnational character based on cutting-edge research and innovation. We want to be a reference point for international students looking to engage with the local community while ensuring access to the same tools for a successful career that Italian students hold."

LM DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGY (DIBIO)
For the next academic year, DiBio adds to the already active master's degree course in Marine Biology, taught entirely in English, which takes place at the Chioggia (Venice) headquarters, in close connection with the territory and the lagoon and marine environment, the new courses in Evolutionary Biology, and Quantitative and Computational Biosciences which will take place in Padua.
The new master's degree courses in English at DiBio offer students a stimulating educational environment, with seminars and lessons held by international visiting scientists who introduce students to a global context. Field activities in the area, such as sampling experiences in marine and terrestrial environments, and laboratory and exercise activities offer the possibility of experimenting with research activities, including their development, data collection and analysis, and discussion of the results. Interactive activities, such as Journal Club for the critical discussion of scientific articles and group work, allow the acquisition of soft skills that will facilitate graduates entering the world of work, as well as internship paths at foreign universities and laboratories, both European and non-European, facilitated in their journey also by the language in which the teaching is delivered.

LM DEPARTMENT OF INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING (DII)
From 2024/25 the DII will activate two new master's degree courses entirely in English, Aerospace Engineering, and Electrical Engineering, the only ones present in the entire Northeast, which increase the number of master's courses in a foreign language in the department to five. The number of foreign students enrolled in master's degrees is constantly growing, reaching more than 300, compared to over 400 applications for enrollment arriving every year from abroad. The Department of Industrial Engineering of the University of Padua thus strengthens its international dimension and aims to attract students from all over the world, attracted by excellent training courses on topics with a high rate of innovation such as the space economy, mobility sustainability, renewable energy, and energy transition. Pre-registration opens these days for all degree courses for the 2024-25 academic year: starting on 16 July for master's degrees and from 22 July for three-year degrees.

LM DEPARTMENT OF TECHNOLOGY AND INDUSTRIAL SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT (DTG)
The DTG activates the brand-new Food Industry Engineering course at the Vicenza campus for 2024/25. The course will be entirely delivered in English discussing strategic sectors of Made in Italy that train engineers with multidisciplinary skills capable of conceiving, planning, designing, and managing processes, systems, and services of the food industry. Students receive particular attention on issues related to safety as an essential requirement for production that respects the highest standards of hygiene and quality, traceability of the supply chain, as well as environmental and social sustainability.

University and Municipality of Padua sign a memorandum of understanding for the reception and inclusion of refugees and asylum seekers in university training courses. The signed memorandum defines and strengthens the institutional framework of collaboration between the subjects involved and remains open to other public, central, and local institutions, as well as to the membership of other civil society organizations.

The agreement aims to share and support enrollment opportunities in university studies for applicants and holders of international protection. The goal is to promote access to university studies for those who have not been able to continue their studies in their own country by including and integrating them into the local and national socio-cultural fabric. Holders of international protection asylum permits include subsidiary protection, special protection, and medical care, while those requesting asylum have access to SAI (Sistema di accoglienza e integrazione) programs.

The memorandum of understanding commitments to implement specific projects. The Municipality, in collaboration with the services of the University of Padua, will disseminate information on the opportunities offered both to the asylum seeker and refugee population to the foreign population in general, and to second-generation residents. The University "Padova Per" web portal offers access to news on the services present in the city, initiatives carried out in collaboration with educational institutions, and those offered by the Commission for the representation of people from Padua with foreign citizenship (Commissione per la rappresentanza delle persone padovane con cittadinanza straniera).

The University is committed to promoting study opportunities through initiatives including orientation days, online and in-person information sessions, preparation of accessible online and paper information material, online and in-person helpdesk as well as support for enrolling in courses and accessing university services.

Both signatory bodies will promote and disseminate the contents and objectives of the memorandum of understanding to involve other entities.

" In recent years, the University has implemented many actions to support populations at risk - underlines Professor Cristina Basso, vice-rector with responsibility for International Relations at the University of Padua - by awarding 124 scholarships through the Unipd4 Afghanistan, Unipd4Ukraine, Unipd4Myanmar, UNICORE, and Students at risk, welcoming and supporting students benefiting from the scholarships and interacting with numerous local actors who share the same commitment and interest. In particular, the collaboration with the Municipality of Padua was launched positively for the reception and inclusion in the territory of Afghan citizens arriving in Italy starting from August 2021.

The comparison between the University and the Municipality of Padua then focused on the people hosted in the municipal reception network, discovering that very few look at the opportunity of training at a university institution as a tool for integration into Italian society.

The need therefore emerged to stipulate a memorandum of understanding aimed at structuring the collaboration between the University and the Municipality of Padua to disseminate information about the opportunities offered by the University to the asylum seeker and refugee population. This will take place through online and in-person information sessions, the preparation of online and paper information material, and an online and in-person desk."

The Municipality of Padua promotes the second edition of the intergenerational cohabitation project in response to the significant increase in rental prices, and the number of requests for affordable accommodations from Unipd students.

The initiative, which started from an initiative of the Vice Rectorate for the Right to Education Policies at Unipd, represented by Prof. Matilde Girolami, was launched in the summer of 2023, bringing together the Municipality in collaboration with the University of Padua, ESU, and the social partners, with the formalization of five cohabitation experiences. One of these experiences was also talked about in an episode of Pif's program "Caro Marziano": watch the episode online.

Applications will remain open until August 31st for those over 65 to host off-site students looking for accommodation for the next academic year. The application for participation must be sent via the appropriate online form, available on the Progetto Giovani website.

For further information or to receive support in completing the form, a dedicated desk is available at the Youth Project office, on the second floor of the Altinate San Gaetano Cultural Centre. The desk is open from Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and Thursdays from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m. The counter is closed from August 5th to 18th.

Gianfranca a citizen of Padua who chose to join the project last year and already has some experience in hosting female students. After a year of cohabitation, a relationship of friendship and exchange was born: two people of different generations who share not only the living spaces but also their experiences.
