Laboratory medicine: two international honours for Mario Plebani

Two important international honours have been conferred within a few days on Mario Plebani, former lecturer in Clinical Biochemistry and Clinical Molecular Biology at the University of Padua and former president of the School of Medicine and Surgery.

Plebani has been appointed honorary professor at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, in Argentina.
Next November he will deliver the Plenary Lecture at the CALIILAB Congress, one of the leading Latin American events dedicated to Laboratory Medicine. The appointment was approved unanimously by the Governing Council of the Faculty of Exact Sciences.
In a discipline undergoing rapid transformation, also because of the advent of artificial intelligence, it becomes essential to know how to introduce and manage innovations, translating them into tangible benefits for patients and for the healthcare system.

With more than 1,550 publications, an h-index of 132 and numerous international awards, including the AACC Award, the IFCC Distinguished Award and the Roman Lecture Award 2025, Plebani is among the world’s leading experts in laboratory medicine.

“This title does not recognise only the work of one person, but that of a School of thought that includes many colleagues in Italian laboratory medicine,” comments Mario Plebani. “Scientific progress does not arise from individual effort, but from the continuity of the work of Schools. Scientific societies too, such as SIBioC, have the task of ensuring a future for the discipline and for its professionals.”

On 27 July, in Salt Lake City, Plebani was also appointed Global Editorial Director of the editorial division of the Project Santa Fe Foundation, which will launch the journal «Value-Based Care and Population Health Diagnostic Journal».

“The appointment represents a fundamental milestone in the Foundation’s mission: to transform laboratory medicine from a reactive model, based on reporting, into a proactive and predictive management of population health,” the statement reads. “Professor Mario Plebani brings unparalleled global standing.”

The Foundation also recalls his international academic appointments, his presidency of the European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, and his current editorial roles with the journals Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine and Diagnosis.
