Open excavations in Villamarzana

After a year-long توقف, the new excavation campaign at the protohistoric site of Villamarzana resumes in September, directed by Michele Cupitò, professor in the Department of Cultural Heritage of the University of Padua. The “Open Excavations” days have already been scheduled, the initiative that on 17 and 24 September 2026 offers the chance to discover the excavations at Villamarzana, visit the National Archaeological Museum of Fratta Polesine and follow the materials laboratory set up in the centre of Villamarzana.
The new research campaign, which has just resumed, aims to deepen knowledge of this large village, which between the Late Bronze Age and the beginning of the Early Iron Age (13th–9th century BC) represented an important centre of settlement, production and exchange.
Through archaeological excavation it is possible to progressively reconstruct not only the organisation of the settlements, but also concrete aspects of daily life: domestic and production spaces, craft activities, methods of procuring and processing raw materials, commercial links and relationships with other territories.
Participation in “Open Excavations” is free of charge, subject to booking.
For further information and bookings for the scheduled events, it is possible to contact the National Archaeological Museum of Fratta Polesine by telephone on 0425 668523 or by email at drm-ven.museofratta@cultura.gov.it.
The excavation is part of the project “Prima Europa. La protostoria del Polesine”, funded by Fondazione Cariparo and coordinated by the Soprintendenza Archeologia Belle arti e Paesaggio for the provinces of Verona Rovigo and Vicenza in synergy with the National Archaeological Museum of Fratta Polesine and the Municipality of Villamarzana
