The Church of San Francesco Grande and the ancient Hospital of Padua

On the afternoon of Wednesday 7 October, the church of san Francesco in Padua will host the presentation of the volume "La Chiesa di san Francesco Grande e l’Ospedale antico di Padova", edited by Girolamo Zampieri.

Talks are scheduled by Lucio Biasori and Gianmario Guidarelli, lecturers at the University of Padua, and by Unipd senior scholar Vittoria Romani.

This study offers an in-depth multidisciplinary investigation into one of Padua’s most important monumental and historic complexes. Ranging across archaeology, local history, art history, architecture and scientific conservation, the volume explores the urban evolution of Padua’s eastern quarter from its pre-Roman roots to the Venetian era. At the centre of the work are the late-Gothic church and the adjacent Ancient Hospital – founded in 1414 by Baldo Bonafari and Sibilla de Cetto – which historically combined spiritual care with charitable assistance, marking a revolutionary milestone as an early site of clinical medical teaching associated with the University of Padua.
