Characteristics and objectives
The Master of Science in Pharmacy is a five-year program.
The educational program is designed to provide scientific basis and specific theoretical, practical and regulatory know-how on drugs and medicines required to the Pharmacist, a professional figure with unique competences and role in the healthcare field. The Pharmacist is the 'Expert of medicinal products', who combines the knowledge of medicinal science with the pharmacy practice and management. The Pharmacist distributes medicines and informs about their correct use in order to yield therapeutic effectiveness and avoid drawbacks due to their misuse or abuse.
He can also provide personalized support for patients for the adherence to pharmacological therapies and to offer advice to healthy subjects in order to prevent diseases.
Furthermore, the Pharmacist informs about the appropriate use of other wellbeing products (cosmetics, food supplements, herbal products, foods for special groups, medical devices, in vitro diagnostics, medical-surgical aids and sanitary items).
Finally, the pharmacist can operate as manager in the research, development, production, control, delivering and post-marketing supervision of drugs, diagnostics and health products.
In details, students in the first and second year will learn basic scientific disciplines (mathematics, physics, inorganic and organic chemistry, biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, microbiology, nutrition science, statistics). The next years will cover specific core subjects, such as medicinal chemistry, drug analysis, pathology, pharmacology, toxicology and pharmacovigilance, pharmaceutical technology, and legislation). In the last years of the program, students will be trained with specialized topics (medical devices, cosmetic and dietary products, phytocompounds, economy and marketing, clinical biochemistry, pharmacy business management and all the services required by current legislation.); they will be trained with a mandatory six-month internship period in community or hospital pharmacy (practical-evaluative internship) and they will prepare the final work for dissertation that can be an experimental work in a research laboratory or a bibliographic and data elaboration work.
