Starting from the 36th cycle, by decision of the Council of Doctoral Course Coordinators, the mention of Doctor Europaeus will no longer be issued.
This decision is linked to the fact that this mention is now outdated. It was in fact a recognition established at the end of the 90s by the Conference of Rectors of European Universities to stimulate the mobility of doctoral students.
The CRUE has not existed for many years. The EUA, and in particular the Council for Doctoral Education, does not recognize this type of certificate, because it is now outdated and limited to Europe only. The certificate therefore has no value in other universities and countries.

To obtain the mention of Doctor Europaeus, it is necessary to meet some additional requirements:

  • evaluations of the dissertation work must be made by at least two professors from two universities in two countries of the European Union other than the one in which the dissertation will be discussed;
  • at least one member of the selection board must belong to a country of the European Union other than the one in which the dissertation is discussed;
  • part of the discussion must take place in one of the official languages of the European Union, other than that of the country in which the dissertation is discussed;
  • the research presented in the dissertation must have been carried out in part in a country of the European Union during a stay of at least three months, even if not continuous and not necessarily in the same campus but with a minimum duration of thirty days each

The foreign teachers who evaluate the dissertations must also be different from the lecturer present in the final examination commission.

Candidates who intend to obtain the mention of Doctor Europaeus must inform the coordinator of the PhD course and the administrative contact person by the date indicated in the timetable. By the same date, candidates must submit their application for the Doctor Europaeus nomination to the PhD and postgraduate office, by sending an email to: phd@unipd.it and attaching the certifications of the period spent abroad.
