Cristina Guarnieri is a researcher at the Department of Cultural Heritage: Archaeology, Art history, Cinema and Music of the University of Padua. In 2016 she obtained her qualification as University Professor at Level II, and in 2018 as University Professor at Level I (SSD L-ART/01).
She teaches a course on medieval art history which is credited as part of a bachelor’s degree in History and Conservation of Cultural Heritage, or a bachelor’s degree in Dams (also valid for Letters, Modern Languages, Literature and Culture).
She is a member of the doctoral board of History, Criticism and Conservation of Cultural Heritage, and of the Council of the School of Specialisation in Archaeological and Historical-Artistic Heritage. For the latter she has taught various classes, as well as the course of medieval art history, alternating with other instructors. She has supervised several specialisation and doctoral theses, as well as several post-doctoral research grants. She has been a member of committees for the assignment of postgraduate and postdoctoral scholarships and research grants, as well as a member of the panel judging competitions for admission to the School of Specialisation and to the Doctoral degree. She has been part of the Teaching Commission of the Degree Course in History and Conservation of Cultural Heritage and has been the contact person for internships. She is currently an advisor for student study plans and is part of the commission evaluating candidates’ previous career experience. She is also the Department's contact person for disability and inclusion. Since 2011, further, she has been a member of the editorial committee of the Departmental journal "Musica e Figura".
She has directed and participated in several interdepartmental, University or externally funded research projects: she has been the PI for the project funded by the Veneto Region "La Serenissima via mare", with the University of Rijeka (2018-2019). She has also been the PI of the multidisciplinary and interdepartmental University project "Il complesso degli Eremitani a Padova: Percorsi visivi". She has participated in the University Project "The illuminated Choir books in Veneto" with Prof. Lovato (2011-2014), in the MEVE Project (2008 strategic projects), coordinated by Prof. Collodo (2010-2013).
Her interests are mainly focused on Venetian painting of the thirteenth, fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries. She has published extensively on these topics, her most important contributions being the catalogue for the Tours exhibition on Venetian works in French museums (2005) and her monograph on Lorenzo Veneziano (2006). She has also deepened her inquiry into the Venetian pictorial production carried on around its two main fourteenth-century masters, Paolo and Lorenzo, reconstructing a catalogue of the numerous personalities active between the first and the second half of the century. Her conclusions have been published in several collections, including essays in the journal "Saggi e Memorie" (2008) and in "Arte Veneta" (n. 71, 2015; n. 73, 2017). More recently, she has broadened her interests to painting in the Veneto area and in neighboring regions, Lombardy especially, but also the Adriatic area of Venetian influence, with new research projects concerning Padua, Verona, Mantua and the Istrian-Dalmatian shore. The findings of this research have been shared in numerous publications, conferences and speeches at national and international conferences.

Research Area

The studies conducted are based on a diversity of approaches and methodological frameworks and concern different geographical areas (Venetian and Veneto areas, the two shores of the Adriatic, Lombardy and Emilia), as well as different genres (painting, sculpture, miniature and metalwork). Particular attention is also paid to historical and social factors, and to the ways in which the interweaving of devotional experience and liturgical ritual shapes the typology of the works. Consideration is equally given to the organisation of sacred space and the needs, habits and practices of the faithful in their public and private expressions of religious piety. Examples of this type of research include studies on particular types of movable works, such as folding reliquary altarpieces in the Venetian area, which imitate the prototype of the Pala d'Oro of St. Mark's in Venice (see the articles ‘The Stories of St. Lucy by Jacobello del Fiore and Venetian Folding Reliquary Altarpieces’, 2018; Una pala ribaltabile per l’esposizione delle reliquie: le Storie di Santa Lucia di Jacobello del Fiore a Fermo, 2017; La pala ribaltabile di Nicoletto Semitecolo per l’altare di San Sebastiano nella cattedrale di Padova, forthcoming), and research on private devotion (she jointly edited the 2018 volume Pregare in casa. Oggetti e documenti della pratica religiosa tra Medioevo e Rinascimento, and contributed the essay «Con le più lussuose materie adoperabili». Dittici, trittici e altri oggetti per la devozione personale di manifattura veneziana tra Duecento e Trecento).
Another line of research, closely related to those already outlined, concerns the reconstruction of the dismembered works, including consideration of their function and the original context for which they were conceived. Essays on this topic include: Una Crux de medio ecclesiæ di Jacobello di Bonomo per la chiesa di San Matteo di Rialto a Venezia, 2019, Il polittico di Marco di Paolo per la chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo a Fermo, 2018, Per la restituzione di due Croci perdute di Paolo Veneziano, 2014, or the volume Autour de Lorenzo Veneziano. Fragments de polyptiques vénitiens du XIVe siècle together with the essay Le polyptyque pour l'église San Giacomo Maggiore de Bologne dans l'oeuvre de Lorenzo Veneziano, 2005). As part of this area of research, an interdepartmental University Project entitled The Church of the Hermits in Padua: visual paths was conducted between 2014 and 2016 (see the website: www.eremitani.beniculturali.unipd.it).
Other publications have focused instead on particular iconographic subjects (Il tema dell'exaltatio Augustini doctoris tra devozione e autocelebrazione, 2016, Una lactatio sancti Bernardi di Lorenzo Veneziano, 2016) or on technical issues (such as the volume Rabeschi d'oro. Pittura e oreficeria a Venezia in età gotica, and the article in the same volume Indagini sulle lavorazioni dell'oro come contributo per lo studio della pittura veneziana delle origini, 2015; the article Gli ultimi anni di Lorenzo Veneziano, alias Lorenzo di Nicolò: il disegno per un antependium, 2003, and the article Una Madonna de l'umiltà de panno lineo, 1998). One final area of research is that of patronage, and the use of the work in a self-celebratory context (see Il monumento funebre di Francesco Dandolo nella sala del capitolo ai Frari, 2015, La cappella gentilizia e le altre decorazioni trecentesche nel Palazzo Ducale di Mantova al tempo dei Gonzaga, 2013).
