In the period 1990-92 he worked in industry as responsible for the design of digital microprocessor control boards. From 1992 to 1999 he was Assistant Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering (UNIPD). In 1996 and 2000 he participated in two European research programs (CRAFT). From 1998 to 2000 he was responsible of the convention "Development of issues concerning industrial electronics", stipulated with the Research Consortium in Industrial Electronics (CREI-Ven). In the year 2000 he joined the Department of Electrical, Management and Mechanical Engineering (DIEGM) of the University of Udine, as Associate Professor. There he started the Laboratory of Electric Drives (EDLAB-UD) and was responsible for the National Research Project "Modeling and control in innovative power steering drives" (PRIN 2003). In 2005 Prof. Zigliotto joined the Department of Technique and Management of Industrial Systems (DTG) of the University of Padua. Since March 1st, 2011 he is Full Professor of Electrical Converters, Machines and Drives. In Vicenza he started the Laboratory of Drives for Industry and Electric Mobility (EDLAB-VI). The activity can be framed in the paradigm of "more intelligent drives", which includes artificial intelligence techniques for predictive maintenance, modeling and innovative techniques for the control of electric AC drives. His research activity is documented in more than 190 publications on Proceedings of International Conferences and Journals. He has been also the supervisor of more than 75 of bachelor and master theses and tutor of 7 PhD students. From 1998 to 2023, he was the Secretary of the IEEE IAS-IES-PELS North Italy Joint Chapter. Prof. Zigliotto is reviewer for the IEEE Transactions on IE, IA, PELS, JESTPE. Since 2012 he is evaluator of research projects for the Autonomous Province of Trento and listed in the roll of reviewers for the evaluation of REPRISE ministerial research programs. From 2019 to 2022 he was designated member of the Board of Directors of the National Interuniversity Consortium ELMO - Electrification of Mobility. Since 2021 he is in the Stanford University's World's Top 2% Scientists list. From 2021 to 2023 he was a member of the Commission for the National Scientific Qualification (ASN) and deputy Director of the Department of Technique and Management of Industrial Systems at the University of Padua.

Research Area

The scientific activity is carried out mainly at the Electric Drives laboratory (EDLAB_VI - a section of the integrated research laboratory in Mechatronics of the Department of Technology and Management of Industrial Systems (DTG) of the University of Padua). Prof. Zigliotto started EDLAB-VI in 2006, and he is now the scientific responsible. The laboratory is equipped with three complete integrated work stations for the FCP (Fast Control Prototyping), similar to many other Italian and foreign research centers. The topics of study are mainly related to Electric Drives, with special interest for the application of innovative control techniques to AC motors. In a broader context, research is devoted to the automatic commissioning and energy saving in industrial machines. The main research topics in the last three years can be summarized as follows:

A) NEURAL NETWORK FOR PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION AND AC DRIVES SELF-COMMISSIONING
B) HIGH EFFICIENCY CONTROL TECHNIQUES FOR INDUSTRIAL DRIVES AND AUTOMOTIVE
C) SENSORLESS DRIVES AND MODEL PREDICTIVE CONTROL OF AC DRIVES.
D) CONVOLUTIONAL NEURAL NETWORKS BASED CONDITION MONITORING OF AC MOTOR DRIVES.
