Paolo Villoresi is a Full Professor of Experimental Physics at the Department of Information Engineering, University of Padua.
He is the Director of Padua Quantum Technologies Research Center at the University of Padova.

He studied Physics and Applied Mathematics at the University of Padua, including a research period at the Physics Department of Risø National Laboratories in Denmark, completing his studies in 1991. He joined the structured teaching staff of the University of Padua in 1994.
He is the founder and coordinator of the QuantumFuture research group, which focuses on frontier research in quantum communications, quantum information protocols and secure telecommunications. He led the first demonstration of single photon exchange between Space and Earth, published in 2008, and then coordinated the demonstration of quantum communication from Space with polarisation coding (2015) and with temporal modes (2016) and the extension of the limit of single photon exchange to over 20000 km (2019).
Member of the Institute of Photonics and Nanotechnology of the National Research Council since its foundation and of the National Institute for Nuclear Physics.
Author of more than 300 publications in scientific journals and in books and encyclopaedias, in the fields of quantum communication and information, quantum optics, laser-matter and atomic interaction and plasma physics.
Invited speaker on all continents, as well as referee for international journals and research projects.
He is and has been a coordinator in several national and international research projects in the fields of quantum communication, physical processes in the attosecond domain and applications of lasers in medicine and industry.
Co-author of 11 industrial patents and patent applications, he has won awards including first place at the first StartCup, now the National Innovation Award, in 2002.

Selected current research activities in Experimental Quantum Communications, as Group coordinator:
• Project coordinator for the development of a Space Quantum Communication payload for the Italian Space Agency (2017-2025).
• Development and patenting of Quantum Random Number Generators QRNG – 17 Gbps record rate generated so far. (2014-2019)
• First demonstration of Quantum Communications from an orbiting transmitter on a LEO satellite using polarization and temporal degrees of freedom (2010-2016).
• Fundamental experiments in wave-particle duality of photons in Space: Wheeler "Delayed Choice" experiment (2016-2017).
• Q-Space Experiment: first demonstration of single-photon link between a satellite and the Earth (2003-2008).

• Single photon exchange from a MEO satellite (2015).
• Aberration cancellation in quantum interferometry (2006-2009)
• Adaptive optics for entanglement generation and control (2008-2014)
