Andrea Tortella applies his research activity mainly in the field of electrical machines and their applications. The main topics have concerned the development of design and optimization techniques applied to different types of linear and rotating machines, adopted in high-efficient industrial processes, electric propulsion and power generation from renewable energy sources.
The research is developed in national research projects (COFIN 1999, PRIN 2002 and 2005) as well as in research contracts with private companies, most of them managed as scientific supervisor.
He presented an Italian patent application on a single-phase PM motor configuration in 2011, which was approved in 2013.
Prof. Tortella is co-author of several publications presented mainly in International journals and conference proceedings and of two Italian books on transformers and rotating electrical machines. He received four paper awards at international conferences and one at a national conference (Ansys Italy General User Meeting 2013). He was reviewer for different IEEE conferences and for the journals MDPI Applied Sciences, MDPI Energies, COMPEL, IEEE Transaction on Magnetics, Industry Application and Industrial Electronics.
He gave seminars on the following topics
- wind energy applications
- linear electric motors
- numerical simulation for electric machine design
to industry and professional classrooms, PhD students or inside national conferences.
He held a training course on railway electric traction for Alstom Transport S.p.A. (Bologna) in 2009 and he was invited lecturer Winter School on Renewable Energy Systems at Afyon Kocatepe University (Turkey) in 2014.
