Born in 1959, from 1979 until 1986 Johannes Jacobus (Han) Steenwijk studies Slavonic Languages and Literatures at the University of Utrecht, with Russian as primary subject and Serbocroatian, Polish and Knowledge of the Soviet Union as secondary subjects. After participating in several summer schools in Jugoslavia he concentrates on Slovene. As a matter of act, his PhD thesis, prepared from 1987 until 1991 at the University of Amsterdam as PhD student and published in 1992, deals with a subject pertaining to Slovene dialectology. At this same university he holds courses in Russian, Serbocroatian and Slovene.

In 1991, in the immediate aftermath of the Slovene declaration of independence, he works as interpreter for a team of journalists from ITV.

In 1992, following upon an international conference held in Prato di Resia during the previous year, he is assigned by the Municipality of Resia to develop a practical Resian grammar. The results of this project are an orthography (first edition 1994, second edition 2012), a volume on the morphology of the substantive (1999) and an orthographical dictionary (2005). As a consequence of political changes the project is put on hold by the municipality until 2020.

From 1993 until 2001 he works as researcher at the Sorbisches Institut, Cottbus branch, on various projects concerning Lower Sorbian, the most important of which are a sociolinguistic survey on the present state of the language and the development of an active German-Lower Sorbian dictionary.

From 2001 until now he is Head of the Chair for Slovene Language and Literature at the University of Padua, as associate professor. From 2013 until 2021 he also teaches Serbian and Croatian (BCMS) Linguistics as substitute professorand from 2021 Comparative Slavic Linguistics.

Apart from the project for the Municipality of Resia, his central projects are the development of a site with information on Resian (electronic editions of studies, texts and a multilingual dictionary) and the electronic edition of the Padua Manuscript (1699, 1704) containing the Italian-Croatian-Latin trilingual dictionary by Giovanni Tanzlingher. The latter project was realised in collaboration with Rosanna Benacchio and Nada Vajs Vinja. International conferences at the University of Padua which he helped organise are a conference in occasion of the fifthiest anniversary of the Chair for Slovene (2015), a conference on Gerasim Zelić (2016) and a conference on Milko Matičetov (2019).

Furhermore, he has collaborated with the Linguistic Bibliography on Slavistic publications, with the Nederlands Letterenfonds on the evaluation of translations into and from Slovene and with MULTEXT-East on the creation of a standard for the morphological and syntactic description of Resian texts. He is a member of the editorial board of the journal Jezik in slovstvo.

In 2021 he was elected corrisponding member of the Slovene Academy of Sciences and Arts.
