Lara Maritan received a degree (B.S. + M.S.) in Geological Sciences in 1998 and a Ph.D. in Earth Sciences in 2003 from the University of Padova (Italy). From 2003 to 2007 she has been a post-doc research assistant at the University of Padova. Between 1999 and 2005 she visited the University of Glasgow (UK) and the University of Cardiff (UK), founded by scholarships from A. Gini Foundation, the Italian Society of Mineralogy and Petrology, and the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei-Royal Society. She received two awards for her research activity from the Italian Association of Archaeometry in 2004, and the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in 2006, and one for her PhD thesis from the Italian Association for the Study of Clays in 2005. From October 2007 she is assistant professor in Georesources and minero-petrographic applications for the environment and cultural heritage (GEO/09) at the Department of Geosciences, University of Padova.
The research activity of Lara Maritan is documented by numerous papers in international ISI and non-ISI journals, contributions in books and conference proceeding volumes. It mainly focused on the application of petrography to the study of materials of the cultural heritage, and on experimental petrology aimed to model firing processes of traditional ceramics, and more in detail on the following topics:
- petrography, mineralogy and geochemistry of ancient ceramic productions (Neolithic pottery from Orkney Islands; protohistoric pottery from Padova and Este; Etrusco-Padana type pottery from Veneto region; Bronze and Iron Age pottery from Tell Mishrifeh-Syria; Bronze Age and Hellenistic pottery from Tayma-Saudi Arabia; roman transport amphorae from Adriatic region, Spain, Tunisia; roman ollae from Veneto region; Mesolithic and Neolithic pottery from Sudan; terra sigillata from Veneto region; Medieval glazed-ware from Veneto; terra sigillata from Tunisia; Punic pottery from Sardinia);
- post-depositional processes and formation of secondary phases in terrestrial and lagoon-like (Adriatic Sea, Tyrrhenian Sea, Black Sea, Sudan) environments in ancient ceramic materials;
- petrography of lithic materials for provenance studies and conservation (roman gravestone from Aquileia; analyses for the preservation of trachyte paving in salt-controlled weathering conditions; pipes of the roman aqueduct of Padova; trachyte architectonical elements in Veneto region; trachyte; Egyptian flint form western desert and second cataract along the Nile);
- modelling firing processes of clay materials at different firing conditions, with particular interest on clay materials rich in organic matter and in mollusc shell fragments, on hematite nucleation and growth in the firing of carbonate-rich clay, and on the reliability of refiring as a tool in archaeometry;
- production of industrial bricks using new “eco-friendly” mix designs
- image analysis in the study of pores system and textural features of ceramic materials;
- microtextures and microstratigraphy as tools for the identification of the painting technique;
- characterisation and production technology of Roman plasters (Montegrotto Terme – Padova, Pompeii, Israel);
- archaeomagnetism of prehistoric pyrotechnological installations
- diagenesis of bones.
