Genes involved in reception of chemical cues in the guppy (Poecilia reticulata)

The perception and discrimination of thousands of different odorants by the vertebrate olfactory system results from the activation of specific odorant receptors expressed by olfactory neurons in the nose.
Vertebrate odorant receptors comprise three types of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs): the olfactory receptors OR, vomeronasal V1R and V2R receptors. Teleost fish have about 100 OR genes.

The work will involve the isolation, characterization and study of variation of odorant receptors in the guppy (Poecilia reticulata), using the female guppy genome and several transcriptomes available in gene banks and bioinformatic tools. Differential expression between males and females and between tissues will be evaluated using bioinformatics tools from available transcriptomes in gene banks and by real time PCR on candidate genes.
