Giancarlo Calvagno was born in Venezia, Italy, in 1962. He received the “Laurea in Ingegneria Elettronica” degree from the University of Padova in 1986, and the Doctorate degree in “Ingegneria Elettronica e dell’Informazione” from the University of Padova in 1990.
From 1988 to 1990 he was at the Coordinated Science Laboratory of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a Visiting Scholar.
From 1990 to 1998 he was with the Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell’Informazione of the University of Padova as a “Ricercatore”. Since 1998 he has been an Associate Profesor in the same Department.
He has been involved in several national research projects on image and video coding and processing.
He has been involved in the European research projects IST-1999-20859 "MetaVision" and IST-2004-506969 "MetaCamera", where he worked on lossless and near-lossless compression of high-definition video sequences.
He has also been involved in the European research projects RFS-PR-09037 “Muons scanner to detect radioactive sources hidden in scrap metal containers: MuSteel” where he worked on problems related to the reconstruction and classification of 3D objects in cosmic ray (muon) tomography.
