Silverio Bolognani is native of the Trento Province, North Italy. He received the Laurea degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Padova, Italy, in 1976. In the same year, he joined the Dept. of Electrical Eng. at the same University, studying thyristor converters and synchronous motor drives.

Some years later, he started the Electric Drives Laboratory where a variety of researches on brushless and induction motor drives are carried out in the frame of European and National research projects, related to the fields of land and water electrical propulsion, electric energy generation, automotive, industry, commercial and home applications of motor and drives.

He is presently engaged in researches on advanced control techniques for motor drives (fault-tolerant control, optimal control, sensorless control, predictive control, …) and on design of ac electrical motors for variable speed applications (PM synchronous machine, induction machines). He is author of three patents and more than 200 papers on electrical machines and drives.

At present he is Chairman of the IEEE North Italy IA/IE/PELS Joint Chapter and Member of the EPE Association Steering Committee. He was also for a long time Member of a Working Group of CPV (Centro Produttività Veneto, an Agency of the Chamber of Commerce of Vicenza for continuous education and technology transfer) and President of an Association of local Industries in the Power electronics and Electromechanical fields. Now he is Member of the Technical Consulting Committee of CPV.
He was Head of the Electrical Engineering Department from 2001 to 2008, Member of the Scientific Committee of the University from 2004 to 2008, and Vice-Rector for Research from 2019 to 2015.
He has been serving International Conferences as member of the Steering or Technical Committees.

He is now a full Professor of Converters, Electrical Machines and Drives at the Department of Industrial Engineering of the University of Padova and Vice-Rector for the Research at the same University. His teaching activity was first devoted to Electrical circuit and Electromagnetic Field Theory and, later, to Electrical traction, Electrical machine design, Electrical industry applications, Electrical drives.
