Research Area
he current fields of research concern:
- materials with optical properties: reflective, anti-reflective, controlled refractive index, luminescent, with defined coloration;
- materials with mechanical properties: scratch resistance, hard;
- materials for gas sensors or with catalytic properties: polluting gas sensors, self-cleaning materials, to catalyze chemical reactions, to purify air or water, photosensitive materials;
- materials with controlled porosity for filters;
- synthesis of nanopowders and nanoparticles;
- synthesis of polymer matrix nanocomposites.
These materials are developed both with traditional techniques (melting, sintering) and with innovative chemical techniques (sol-gel, colloid chemistry). We are able to synthesize nanopowders of oxides, metals and semiconductors that are used to obtain nanocomposites with functional or structural properties. We also have technologies for the deposition of thin and thick films (spinning, dipping, sprying).
The following characterizations are available in the laboratory:
Thermal analysis: coefficient of expansion, thermo gravimetry, differential thermal analysis;
Spectroscopies: absorbance (transmittance) and UV-VIS-NIR reflectance measurements (also with integrating sphere), FT-IR measurements, luminescence measurements;
Refractive index and film thickness measurements by spectroscopic ellipsometer;
X-ray diffraction for the determination of crystalline phases;
Surface morphology measurements by atomic force microscope;
Mechanical bending and tensile tests.
Gas sensing tests: measurement of the variation of the refractive index or of the absorbance in the presence of gas.
