Federica Toniolo (female) is full professor in History of Illuminated Manuscripts and Medieval Art at the Department of Cultural Heritage of the University of Padua
Her studies focus on illuminated manuscripts, particularly late Medieval and Renaissance ones, considering both the relations between illuminations and paintings and the connections between text and image in religious and secular manuscripts. In addition, her research interests span to interdisciplinary projects on the cataloguing of illuminated manuscripts through the use of digital tools. She has been editor in the last 10 years of the column Miniatura online in the “Rivista di Storia della Miniatura”. In addition she has collaborated to the CULTURA project (FP7 STREP) supervising a collaboration agreement for research (2011-2013). She had been outside advisor and consultant 2014-2015 for Broken books, a web-based application developed by the Center for Digital Humanities of the Saint Louis University (MO) which allows for the digital reconstruction of dismembered books that, at some time in their history, were taken apart, "broken" into pieces, and dispersed.
She has been awarded several honors and grants: Member of The Renaissance Society and Medieval Academy of America; Scientific Committee "Rivista di Storia della Miniatura"; Equipe de recherche en restauration et conservation du patrimoine (l’Institut national du patrimoine, Paris). From 2015 she has been member of the Honorary Committee of the series Survey of Illuminated Manuscripts in France published da Harvey Miller/ Brepols.
She has a considerable experience in national and international project, also as a leader: The illuminated Choir books in Veneto in the XIV century: The image, the text and the music, PRAT 2007, member of the research group; Alma Mater Librorum. Manoscritti e incunaboli miniati della Biblioteca Capitolare di Padova tra Medioevo e Rinascimento, Excellence project Cariparo 2008, member of the research group (2009-2011), person in charge (2011-2013); Medioevo Veneto, Medioevo Europeo. Identità e Alterità, Athenaeum strategic project 2008, member of the research group; Frati ‘magistri’ studenti e i loro libri miniati: immagini nei codici di biblioteche conventuali padovane, PRIN 2009.
Among her professional activities, there are a number of curatorial collaborations for important exhibitions (Mindful Hands. Capolavori Miniati della Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Venezia, 2016-2017; Aldo Manuzio. Il Rinascimento di Venezia, Venezia, 2016; Splendore nella Regola. Codici miniati da Monasteri e Conventi nella Biblioteca Universitaria di Padova, Padua, 2011).
