Martina Massaro is a RTDA in architectural history at the University of Padua, within the Department of Cultural Heritage, where she is involved in the ERC-funded project Venice’s Nissology, coordinated by Ludovica Galeazzo, focusing on the transformation of the Venetian islands from the sixteenth century to the present.\n\nAn art and architectural historian, her research focuses on patronage between the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly at the intersection of art and architecture, with a specific interest in garden history.\n\nBorn in Padua, she studied in Venice at Ca’ Foscari University under Lionello Puppi, and later earned her PhD in History of the Arts at the joint Ca’ Foscari–IUAV Doctoral School (2010–2013) under the supervision of Donatella Calabi, with a dissertation on the patronage of the Treves de Bonfili family.\n\nIn 2016, the results of her research were awarded the Pompeo Molmenti Prize by the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti.\nSince 2013, she has held research fellowships at the IUAV University of Venice and, from 2017, at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Padua, where she began research on Guido Costante Sullam, under the coordination of Stefano Zaggia.\n\nHer studies primarily focus on Jewish patronage, with particular attention to the history of the Veneto region. Her approach embraces interdisciplinary perspectives that draw from art history, economics, and social history.\n\nSince 2013, she has been a member of the international research group Visualizing Cities in collaboration with Duke University, and from 2020 to 2024, she served as Visiting Professor in Architectural History in Yaoundé at the National Advanced School of Public Works of the Republic of Cameroon.\n\nShe has contributed to the curatorship of several exhibitions on the history of Venice in the modern and contemporary eras, and her research has been published in monographs and collective volumes. Between 2021 and 2022, she collaborated with the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity on the Italian Ministry of Culture’s Census of Architecture from the Second Half of the 20th Century. Since 2022, she has been working with CASVA in Milan on the study and cataloguing of the archives of Studio MID, Bela Angelus, and Mario Salvadè.
