Andrea Raffaele Ghiotto is associate professor in Classical Archaeology (L-ANT/07) at the Department of Cultural Heritage of the University of Padua.
Born in 1971, after a classical education he earned a degree in Literature and Philosophy, a master in Archaeology and a doctoral degree in “Archaeology: city and artistic production” at the University of Padua. Already winner of three research grants at the Departments of Classics and Archaeology, from 2011 to 2019 he has been a university researcher of Classical Archaeology at the Department of Cultural Heritage of the University of Padua.
He teaches “Roman Archaeology” for the undergraduate degree course in History; “Urbanism of the Classical World” for the master degree course in Archaeological Sciences; “Landscapes of the Ancient World” for the master degree course in Landscape Studies; “Roman Topography” at the graduate school in Archaeological Heritage. He is a member of the faculty board and tutor at the doctoral school in “History, criticism and preservation of Cultural Heritage”. Besides teaching at the university, he is also actively involved in educational field activities in the archaeological site of the Roman theatre of Aquileia (“Excavation and Study of ancient cities: Aquileia 1-2”) and in the Laboratory of Archaeology in Padua (“Laboratory of archaeological artefacts: Aquileia”).
His main research interests are the public and private architecture and the urban planning of the Roman age in Italy and in the western provinces, with a particular interest for the diachronic analysis of multi-layered urban sites and for the study of the transformation phenomena of ancient settlements.
Since 1995 he collaborates taking on roles of increasing responsibility on the archaeological researches in Nora, Sardinia (Roman Forum, Roman Temple, building located east of the Forum). From 2010 to 2013 he has helped managing the research activities at the House of Titus Macer in Aquileia ("fondi ex Cossar"). Also in Aquileia, since 2015 he directs the archaeological researches in the area of the Roman theatre ("fondi ex Comelli-Moro"). In all those activities he coordinates, both from a methodological and operational point of view, research groups constituted by many students and specialists in the field, involving them in the critical elaboration of the data and in the publication of multidisciplinary scientific editions.
He is a member of the scientific committee of the journal “Quaderni Norensi” and the series “Antenor Quaderni”, of the board of directors of the National Association for Aquileia and the editorial committee of the journal “Aquileia Nostra”. He is the author of a hundred scientific publications and three monographs: The Roman Architecture in the cities of Sardinia (Rome 2004); Nora. The Roman Forum. History of an urban area from the Phoenician age to the late antiquity. 1997-2006 (4 volumes, with J. Bonetto, G. Falezza and M. Novello, Padova 2009); Aquileia. Fondi Cossar, 2.2, La domus di Tito Macro e le mura. L’età tardoantica e le fasi successive. L’intervento di valorizzazione (with E. Madrigali, Roma 2024). In preparation is the publication of the excavation of the Roman Temple in Nora.
