Associate Professor of Surgery, board certified in Surgery and in Gastroenterology by the University of Padua. His main interest has been, from the very beginning, the diagnosis and the minimally-invasive therapy of esophageal function diseases. He is the principal author or co-author of more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific papers with a 340 cumulative Impact Factor and a 35 “H” Index. In 1991-92 he was accepted for a 1-year "Esophageal fellowship" at the Department of Surgery of the University of Southern California, under the mentorship of prof. TR DeMeester. He has actively participated in different multicentric prospective trials on the treatment of esophageal achalasia (the Italian trial on Botox injections vs Laparoscopic myotomy [Ann Surg, 2004], and the European trial on pneumatic dilations vs Laparoscopic myotomy [N Engl J Med, 2011 and Gut, 2016]). He has been "core panelist" in the preparation of the ISDE (International Society for Disease of the Esophagus) Guidelines on Achalasia, published on the Society journal (Dis Esophagus 2018). More recently he has focused his interest on the evaluation of the impact of the manometric phenotypes of achalasia on long-term results of the treatment, and the elaboration of the so-called “Padova Theory” of the evolution and transition of the different phenotypes of achalasia. He is in charge of the Esophago-gastric physiopathology Lab of the Clinica Chirurgica 3 of the University and Azienda Ospedaliera of Padua, where he has been working since 1989. He has performed more than 700 laparoscopic operations for the treatment of esophageal achalasia (Heller's myotomy and Dor's fundoplication) and more than 500 laparoscopic operations for the treatment of hiatal hernia and gastroesophageal reflux (Nissen's or Toupet's fundoplication). He is active member of several International and National scientific societies.
