Area di ricerca

Flavio Maran carries out research in electron transfer, molecular electrochemistry, nanosciences, and nanomedicine. He especially developed the area of dissociative electron transfers, obtaining results that made the Molecular Electrochemistry and Nanosciences Group of Padova as one of the leading groups worldwide. Studies are being carried out on the charge transfer across biologically relevant systems, such as on the mechanism of electron transfer through conformationally constrained peptide bridges and charge transfer through soft interfaces.
His current research interests also span in various areas of nanosciences, as also shown by his recent publications and international activities. An important topic addressed is the study of molecule-like gold nanoparticles from the viewpoint of both fundamental issues, such as magnetism and lifetime of charged states, and applied research, such as redox catalysis. He is particularly focusing on the synthesis and properties of gold nanoparticles for possible applications in nanomedicine, such as drug delivery and magnetic resonance imaging.
A new research on immunosensors for detection of cancer biomarkers has been successfully started very recently. Other related researches concern the study of the interaction of biomimetic membranes with channel-forming peptides or gold nanoclusters capped by the same peptides, and the use of functionalized self-assembled monolayers for controlled display of bioactive carbohydrates.
Specific expertise: electron-transfer reactions, nanosystems, molecule-like gold nanoparticles, electrochemical biosensors, molecular electrochemistry, bioelectrochemistry.
