Research projects more in detail...

Empathy and sensorimotor simulation

(PI: Prof. Paola Sessa)

This line of research focuses on empathy and simulative processes, and on their neural underpinnings. The main interest is on how observer's and target's characteristics may modulate these processes. These "variables" include emotional facial expressions, perceived trustworthiness, group membership, humanity attribution and individual characteristics along with contextual cues in both normative and clinical adult populations. Preferential methods to study these aspects of empathy and simulative processes are techniques with high temporal resolution, such as the EEG and ERP as our main interest is to unravel the time-course of these processes. We are also planning to use hyperscanning (co-registration of brain activity from two or more interacting individuals) to study these same processes in a more ecological and potentially informative setting.

So far, we have been collaborating on these projects with Prof. Shihui Han (Peking University, China), Jeroen Vaes (Università di Trento) and Prof. Pierre Jolicoeur (University of Montreal, Canada).
At the present, we are collaborating with Dr. Ivana Konvalinka (University of Denmark, Denmark) who an expert on theory and methodology relative to hyperscanning.

Faces representations

(PI: Prof. Paola Sessa)

This line of research mostly focuses on using EEG/ERP to study how social cues conveyed by human faces, such as emotional expressions, group membership, gaze direction and perceived trustworthiness may shape low-level processes, in particular resolution of faces’ representations in visual working memory.

So far, we have been collaborating on these projects with Prof. Pierre Jolicoeur (University of Montreal, Canada) and Dr. Roy Luria (Tel-Aviv University, Israel), who are both experts of visual working memory processes and their neural correlates.
At the present we are mainly collaborating with Dr. Nao Tsuchiya (Monash University), who is an expert in consciousness, and with Dr. Roy Luria (Tel-Aviv University, Israel). The aim of this line of research is to characterize the neural correlates of consciousness for emotional and neutral faces.

Tesi proposte
