Museum of history of Physics

The collections

The core of the Museum was set up in 1740, when Giovanni Poleni inaugurated his Teatro di Filosofia Sperimentale, the first physics cabinet in an Italian University.
After Poleni’s death, in 1761, the following professors of Experimental Philosophy continued increasing the Teatro with new high quality scientific instruments intended for didactics and for research.
Nowadays, the Museum houses several thousands instruments which cover the history of physics and mathematics from the sixteenth century onwards.
The collection is remarkable both for its completeness and for the quality of the objects, many of which are unique or very rare.
