Brief overview of the course

Characteristics and objectives
The course—conducted entirely in English—provides an advanced training level in the promotion of local development. It is aimed at graduates who wish to orient the skills acquired as an undergraduate to the development and growth of local realities in both consolidated development contexts and fragile ones.
Graduates of the master will have an advanced knowledge of curricular subjects and a thorough understanding of specific forms—social dynamics, organizational, economic, territorial and institutional—that characterize the local development processes in different contexts and at different levels of development. The curricular contents will cover in-depth and integrated knowledge: in the fields of political, economic, regional and social organization; statistics for the measurement of local and sustainable development; intercultural learnings; design and development of group dynamics; and in project planning. A particular focus will be placed on the aspects of social and environmental responsibility.
Graduates will have the following abilities and competences: to recognize the emergence of favourable conditions for local development (positive approach); to identify the adequacy/inadequacy of the development processes by making distinctions between them, using as a reference the different categories of local development; and to promote the emergence of favourable conditions for local development (normative approach). More specifically, in this respect, graduates will acquire in depth—and with the ability to apply their knowledge independently, particularly in problematic contexts—the different methodologies used for the formulation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of programs and projects for local development.
The course includes an intrinsic multicultural and multilingual dimension, reinforced by partnerships and agreements for mobility with foreign universities for both students and teachers (Erasmus agreements).

The course begins with a kick-off seminar (3-4 days). This activity provides an orientation to the program by involving all of the operational resources of the course. The propaedeutic efficacy of the kick-off seminar (KOS) comes from the insight gained from how the course content is shared and from what roles and tasks are offered, thus creating a well-informed and solid foundation for the educational activities.
The course includes an on-site traineeship, in Italy or abroad, in conjunction with relevant agencies, associations, institutions, companies and NGOs, with the ultimate objective of conducting a case study that will provide the starting point for the master degree’s final exam.

Occupational opportunities
Potential professional opportunities lie in the vast field of local spatial development at the micro-, meso-, and macro-scale/level. They would involve context analysis and feasibility studies, activities in the framework of the project cycle, and participation in the design and evaluation of policies and sector programs.
Workplaces: NGOs, public administrations at various levels, national and international agencies and organizations, professional associations and citizen associations, and companies.
